Merry Christmas! What a week it's been if you live in Southern Ontario. We had a crazy ice storm that knocked out power to 350,000 people for days. So this is a Christmas we won't forget thats for sure. And thankful that we had warm, cozy and lit houses that we could stay in until our own powered up again. Thanks Mom and Mom & Dad!!
And on that same thought…just hanging out with Ben in our usual routine of good night snuggles. I asked him what his favourite thing was today. He said it was either playing Skylanders with his friend or the battle that him and dad had just before bedtime. I laughed and said I love you so much. You are a bright star in a sometimes really crappy day. And Dad and Naomi too. And Roxy he reminded me. Yes. Roxy too. And you are too he said. Ahhh. Thanks Ben.
Keep smiling! And I hope you are warm, safe and surrounded by people you love and that love you right back.

Next Town Down
I've come across this new band - Next Town Down - that hail from my hometown! I was lucky enough to get a copy of their debut CD - well, that's what happens when you're in the know. Ha! Ha!
I actually do know Matt Lionetti from the band. Super guy and totally lovin' this album. You really want to check this out - and you can even follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
Here's the web: http://www.nexttowndown.com
Maybe my DJ friend in Iceland (yes Mike - that's you!!) can get some radio time for these guys...

Blog Worthy
What a spectacular Thanksgiving weekend!! Adventure Mommy and co. headed up north and spent 2 wonderful days with family, friends and pets. We even started our "First Annual Turkey Bowl" annual football game...it was all new to me. Thank goodness for Angie, the organizer of the event and our team's captain. I think the final score was a tie - but it was a win win for everyone involved. We even had a row of spectators and a photographer or two!
The hosts of the day (my auntie Jul and uncle Bri) had a giant (I mean humongous) jumping castle for the kids to play on all day. And they did. All. Day. Seriously. Naomi hasn't fallen asleep in the car since she was a toddler...and she did that night LOL!
We ended off the game then headed in for supper. I just love love love pot luck suppers. Everyone brings their own special dish and everyone gets to share. What's better than that?
And of course, what would Thanksgiving be without actually being thankful. So I'm thankful for all that is in my life. Now that is better than pot luck now that I think about it.

special note from the author to auntie Jul...it was a totally blog worthy day and I thank you very much for hosting such a great event. Love you :o)

Hock-u-pied
Yep. Thats right. Hock-u-pied. Hey! That's my word - I have been using it for the past couple of years and people always laugh when they hear it. Especially if they have a kid in hockey. Or a kid in hockey, playing both house league and select, add in some skills school, extra ice time, a rink in your backyard... you know the type. Those (read: us) crazy, wonderfully crazy, hockey families.
Say it with me all you hockey parents out there...hock-u-pied. Now use it in place of saying something like "we have a busy weekend coming up - we will be at the arena 4 times in the next 2 days times 2 kids"... you get the picture. This will now read "We are hock-u-pied this weekend". Hock-u-pied fills in the gap nicely. One word that covers so much. Hockey families will now smile knowingly at each other when they hear my word.
Now, I'm not one of those moms that you would call a Hockey Mom. I can't lace up my kids skates, I forget which order the equipment goes on - "Is it your chest pad thingy now?" No mom - not yet! And he goes through the correct order of the equipment going on. And which jersey is it today? How do you know if you are Home or Away? And really, I feel like I'm that mom at the rink. You know the type. The other parents are whispering "Is she still really asking what does offside mean, again?" I mean, really. My 11 year old daughter who never goes to the practices or games understands the game better than me!
Seriously though, to all the hockey mom ladies that I know, you are all wonderful. One more question though - Is that frosting? I mean, icing. Icing, yes that's it. Frosting - no wonder they all roll their eyes at me.

Bart Simpson
My dad loved the Simpsons! Some of you may remember that the Yes Man won my dad's heart the day he showed up at our house for the first time, knocked on the door and when my dad answered, there stood Bart Simpson smiling. It was actually Brad wearing a Bart Simpson mask, but hey! It still made my dad laugh and laugh.
A month or so later, my dad and I were driving into work (we worked for the same company) and we heard the song Unchained Melody. As we both sang I remember being surprised that he knew the song. After all, I was 20 and thought I knew everything, but my dad? He told me that alot of songs that were current hits were actually remakes of classics. Pretty smart guy. These really were the last memories of my dad before he passed away in February 1991.
I'm taking this trip down memory lane for a few reasons. On August 4 my dad would have turned 70. Wow. Unfortunately, he didn't even see 48. Too young, that's for sure. And we all really miss him - his laughing fun side and his serious side. And the side of him that reminded me that sometimes when things happen that "it's just another pit in the cherry pie of life".
My auntie Jul sent me a text that she was thinking about my dad and I. Even after 22 years without him, we all still remember. We each have our own way of healing.
I took a few moments to talk to him and wish him a happy birthday. And then I flew my kite and looked up at the bluest sky and fluffy white clouds knowing that he's smiling down on Bart and I.

Just another thought on how things come around...our kids love to watch the Simpsons - just like their grampa Jack did. And it makes them laugh too! Ben even bought a Bart Simpson ball cap the other day - I just know that grampa would've wanted one just like it.

The Bingo Lady
At the end of the season last summer here at the park, our resident volunteer Bingo Ladies announced that after 7 years they were retiring. Time for someone new to take over the job. The room was packed as it was our last bingo hurrah - a Bonanza Bingo (huge prizes to be won). And the room went silent. My friend Anna who was sitting next to me, nudged me with her elbow and whispered "You should do it!" Ok! I put up my hand and said "I'll do it!" Yipee! The crowd went wild! Well, as wild as you can get at Thursday night Kids Bingo. Ha! Ha!
So...fast forward...last week was my first run as the new Bingo Lady. I think I'll get a shirt that says "I'm the Bingo Lady" as I seriously love the title. Is it serendipity? My dad worked in the bingo world for many of his adult working years...not in the halls, but in the manufacturing end of it. And then I followed along and worked there too. I loved that job. I think that's were I really earned my customer service chops - but that's another blog!
Anyway, the bingo night went well, Anna my sidekick for that week did a fantastic job of watching and listening for "BINGO!" as well as the other jobs like head counter and prize hander-outer. Thanks Anna!
The Yes Man stood at the back of the hall and gave me signals on voice volume control and calling speed. Boy, there's a lot of stuff that goes into this one hour / week of kids entertainment. So glad that I signed up for it. And a perk is that when the little kids see me (in or out of the park) they tug on their moms sleeves, smile and whisper "Mom, it's her! It's the Bingo Lady!" Awesome.

Three Bones
So, I was sitting here typing a different blog, and my little friend Brooke came over and sat beside me on our deck. We looked at these quotes together and decided that we liked this one. However, Brooke informed me that she only has 2 of the required bones from this quote. She is in fact, missing the Funny Bone. Hmmmm. I said "I bet we can find it". And then she told me that she thinks it may be in her foot. Hilarious! Kid humour is the best and most priceless.

Winding Down (or is it up??)
School is almost officially done. Of course, this past week was full of end of year parties, final assemblies and report cards. Yeah! Summer here we come! No more teachers, no more books...you know the tune. Love love love it!
Our budding cake decorator, aka Naomi, baked a special cake to mark the occasion - and the kids went crazy over it! Here's a sneak peak:
That's the rough sketch - now here's the real deal (note the few changes from the original sketch):

Catching Up
Where oh where has June gone?? Packed with end of school activities, volunteer appreciation lunches, and plain ol' fun fun fun.
Adventure Mommy and co. headed to Wonderland on Friday - what a great day that was. We met up with some friends and spent the day riding the rides, eating lots of candy floss, hot dogs, Tiny Tom donuts (and yes, sadly, in that order!). Ben and I even went Go-Carting - first time for me in a Go-Cart and driving it too! Ben kept on asking "Why are we going so slow? Is everyone passing us?" Yep. But I had a blast!!
Now we are just packing up and getting ready for summer vacation - only 2 more days, but hey! Who's counting? Me! That's who!!! I love summer vacation probably just as much as the kids. And the Yes Man will be hanging out with us to kick it off this year.
I will still be blogging throughout the summer - hopefully a little more than I've been doing the past few months - so keep checking in :o)
And, a little update on our chippies...ta da! They were bunnies!! And we hear they are doing fine.
Thanks to my a/Jul for your sweet email to me about the babies.
Happy end of school to you all and keep smiling!

Snow White and the Squirrels (or are they Chipmunks?)
On Sunday afternoon, while the gang was outside gardening (yes, kids too!) we found a little litter of baby squirrels. We thought that's what they were. Hairless and eyes still closed - 4 all grouped together at the edge of our grass. Where did they come from?? The nearest tree (and we have lots of trees on our property) was 15 feet away. How did these helpless little things get here?
We saw that one wasn't alive - but the other 3 were. Naomi (aka helper of all living things except her little brother) was on the scene. Please please please can we keep them? No way. I was adamant for about 5 seconds - then I caved. Okay. 1 night only - and then we figure out what to do with them.
So we made a little box for them with shredded newspaper and a small cloth to keep them snuggly warm - and tried to feed them a little milk. I didn't think they would survive the night without their mama. Lo and behold, they did.
Monday morning, my friend Steph (aka Snow White of the neighbourhood) saw my Facebook posting of the pic and was here in under 5 minutes. Ok - let me see them. Well, she was hooked. While I was busy calling every possible agency in this area as to what to do with these babies, Steph was figuring out how to raise them. Gotta love that girl. I always tease her about her Snowy capabilities. She lives on the ravine and can open up her doors, sing a little tune, hold out an apple and voila! A beautiful creature appears. Seriously.
Well, we finally tracked down someone (an angel) who would take in these little babes - and we found out they were not squirrels, but chippies. Yep. Chip and Dale. Oh yeah. We only had 2 remaining.
Last night, Naomi said she missed the little guys. I told her what an amazing job she did with them and that perhaps she may think of volunteering at an animal shelter. That's a great thing to do!
Here they are:

Brand New Chick
Hey! I'm celebrating - and not only 'cause tomorrows my birthday - woo woo! I feel back to my old self but also onto my new self too. Finding out who I am and loving it. Choosing to say "yes" more to the fun side of life. And feeling purpose-filled. Keepin' on, keepin' on - remembering the wise words of the Yes Man when he reminded our daughter Naomi that it's not how you die, but how you lived your life. And it's all about choices - you get what you give. I feel so philosophical today - last thought for my 42nd year and embarking on 43 (yikes! who said that?!!)
Go forward Brand New Chick!

Tiddleywinks and Other Funny Stories
Today at the home, a resident was having difficulty remembering my name. I pointed to my badge hanging around my neck and she said "Lea Volunteer". Yep. Most of the residents think that Volunteer is in fact my last name. I never correct them. Although today, Helen was a bit upset that she couldn't remember my name. I asked her if she had known any other Lea's in her life...nope. Okay. Well, my friend Steph refers to me as "Pixie Lea" as we have a few other Lea's (or Lee's) in our group. I like that name. It does suit me to a T! So I told this to Helen.
When our time was up Helen said "Bye Pixie and Tiddleywinks" - pointing to Roxy the dog! I laughed and laughed. What a great ending to our visit. I'm sure that to Helen Roxy will always be Tiddleywinks now. As for my name? I answer to just about anything!
The other funny story is not at all related to the retirement home, but to my home. My kids in fact. Specifically what makes my son laugh in hysterics! Just about anything to do with stinky smells...like farts, poops, you name it - the stinkier the better and Ben is howling. Me too! I laugh when he laughs - his laugh is so contagious. Just thinking about it is making me laugh.
Keep on laughing and smiling!

Say Cheese!
Someone commented to me this morning that I'm always smiling. I really do try to smile as much as possible. Because sometimes you gotta fake it til you make it! I figure that my smile is contagious and I'd rather be spreading that around than the grumpies - believe me, there is enough of that out there already! So...

Inspired
How true! Just yesterday, someone in my life told me how important I was to them - and how they weren't sure how they could have made it thorough the year without me. WOW! Super powerful stuff. The thing is, I feel the same way about that person. Isn't it great to hear those words? We all need to hear that. That today you look beautiful. Or I really like how you handled that situation. Or thanks for the big laugh! And that hug meant the world to me.
That the little things really matter. Here's another really great quote that resonates with me:
An arrow can only be shot by
pulling it backward. So when life is
dragging you back with difficulties,
it means that it's going to launch
you into something great. So just
focus, and keep aiming.
Kind of like Dory from Nemo..."just keep swimming"...

A Change in Season
I'm just heading off to one of my volunteer gigs - the retirement home. It's been a little quiet around there lately - I suspect it's just a bit of a change over. Sometimes it's bustling and others not.
I received an email yesterday from the Rec. Director advising that two of the residents had passed away. I knew them both well. Ms. B had recently been moved to a Long Term Care facility - actually while we were away in Cuba so I didn't have a chance to say good bye to her. She was one of my favs. I brought jokes for her almost every visit and she loved loved loved Roxy. We always had a good visit - even if she was a little down. I felt when I left her room that she was a little brighter. Today I will have a chance (I hope) to see her husband who is grief stricken.
The other resident, Ms. G was a bit more challenging. On my very first visit to the floor with Roxy over a year ago, Ms. G followed us around in her wheelchair all mad at us. She didn't think we belonged there - certainly not a dog. Well, I avoided her room on my weekly visits as I didn't want to antagonize her further. She was feisty!
But something changed with Ms. G the past month or so. She would wheel out into the hallway when I was there with Roxy - I'd be talking to another resident and Ms. G would keep passing us. So I took a chance and asked her if she wanted to pet Roxy. No. Okay.
Next visit, same thing. She was becoming more and more interested in us. Guess what? This time when I asked her if she wanted to pet Roxy she said yes. Wow! That even got a smile from Ms. G. The last time I saw her was two weeks ago. She joined in for manicures - just watching of course. But I spoke with her - "Good to see you, Ms. G - how are you today?" She smiled at me and said "Fine". That was our last conversation.
Things can change overnight at the retirement home. Heck - that can happen with anyone.
Tell someone you love them today - and really mean it. Even give them a hug. And be thankful - look up at the beautiful spring sky, check out the buds on the trees and hear those Cardinals singing their pretty song. Spring has sprung.
Keep smiling!

It's the Little Things
Sometimes it's the littlest, tiniest, smallest detail that makes everything worthwhile. Today I had lunch with my daughter - just the two of us. Ben had stayed at school for lunch to participate in a lunch time program. What a treat! We don't often get much "two of us only" time...and I know it means as much to her as it does me.
Our lunch was peaceful (remember she's 10 going on 15!). As I drove through the Kiss n' Ride to drop her off afterwards, I said my usual "Bye, have a good afternoon." She turned and looked at me, and said "You too." Then she flashed me a big smile. A real smile. See? It is the little things that mean the most.
I drove away, watching her hair fly out from under her pink hat and I flashbacked to when she was a teeny tiny tot...good memories. Many more of those moments wanted!

It's All in Your At-ti-tude
I am all about customer service. Maybe it's because my first job, which was part time during High School, was a customer service person at Mark's Work Wearhouse. I loved that job. Yes, I got discounts on their clothes and work boots, but who's kidding who? Mark's didn't have any fashions for teens! Their main focus was the working men and ladies in the construction world. So be it.
Anyway, I remember helping these customers out for at least an hour, and when they were finally heading up to the cash, one fellow asked me if I was on commission. No. Why? Well, because you were so helpful and friendly. Great compliment. Thanks! I was helpful and friendly because that was my job, and you know, my personality. That's probably why I blog about shopping at Walmart or where ever and talking to other shoppers. Always smiling. I almost always get a smile back. That's the real pay back.
Adventure Mommy and co. recently returned from a family vacation in Cuba. It was soooooo much fun. We travelled with another family who we totally love hanging around with and it made all the difference. Tom, Anna and co. are so much fun, I contemplated the idea of hiring them out to other travelling families. Just think of the possibilities!!
Just prior to leaving on this fabulous trip, we received a call from the park manager up at our trailer. I knew this wasn't a social call. Sure enough, a very large tree had fallen on our trailer. Yikes! My trailer!! Grant did his best to cover up the hole the tree made, but it's kind of difficult when the tree is still lodged in the trailer...A quick email to notify our insurance company and we were off on our trip.
We went up to check out the damages when we returned. Pretty extensive - 3 holes in, stress fractures in the ceiling structure, water in the the trailer... But you know what? So far we've encountered helpful, friendly people at our insurance company and we're hoping for the best resolution. Grant gave us a lead on a repair company that does great work.
So that's really what this blog is about. Thanking people when they go above and beyond - even if it is their job. A thank you goes a long way.
Thanks for reading!

I have seen strength,
like an oak in the storm...
I have felt gentleness,
like a golden summer dawn...
I have heard laughter,
like a splashing waterfall...
I have felt protection,
like a shelter all around...
All from a life that gave me life...
All from my father's love.
M.E. MIRO
I received this verse on a sympathy card when my dad died - 22 years ago. Today, I share this with my cousin, Angie, who lost her dad on February 20th. We will miss him.

Mysteries of the Universe and Other Thoughts
Wow! What a great blog title. Bet you thought this was going to be a blog all about, well, the Mysteries of the Universe. It's probably going to end up more about Other Thoughts, but I still love the title.
I had an improptu lunch date with my friend Mae the other day. Talk about deep thoughts. This is the kind of lunch date that I love to have. Seriously. Just talking about life. We really focused our conversation on focusing. Focusing our mind. She reminded me that our subconscious can rule our conscious mind. And I reminded her that my mind is a scary place - at least that's what the Yes Man and I joke about. I'm smiling thinking about it.
But I digress...off on a tangent again...see what I mean about focusing? It's like when I'm talking to the kids and get sidetracked. Ben will patiently be listening to my stories and I'll completely stop right in the middle of it. He says "and then?" Hilarious! Right. Back on track, mommy. So actually, I have a theory on why mommies get sidetracked (notice I'm putting us all in this together). I think that subconsciously we mommies are prepared to be interrupted at any time, so we naturally put in pauses in our conversations to prepare for this. So there. Pretty smart, aren't we?
Anyway, back to my original story with my friend Mae. I came away with a few gems of wisdom (which I have forgotten already) - all but one that is. You know when you are laying in bed at night and it's quiet and dark? Most of us (for sure me) lay there before we fall asleep and download our day. All the negativity and such. Not the best idea right before drifting off. Mae suggested that instead of doing that, take those 10 minutes and really focus on something that you want to change in your life. For example, I fear things - like driving (which I'll have to do a separate blog about because it is all coming back - yeah!). At night, my last thoughts will now be "I am fearless". Mae believes that this will manifest itself into reality. It's funny, but we practiced this exercise at lunch. She said "How would it feel to be fearless?". I felt a radiant energy throughout my body - like a glow and that made me smile. I couldn't contain it. That would feel awesome!
Try it tonight. Lay quietly and really think about one thing, one goal that you want to accomplish for yourself.
Thanks for reading - I am grateful for your time and your comments.

More Time for Play (Doh)
I have blogged about Play Doh before...how it still smells the same as it did when I was a kid. Check it out yourself the next time your near some Play Doh. Pop the lid and take a big sniff...it really is the smell of childhood!
Anyway, Miss Naomi and I were hard at work last night creating some spectacular art. I was thinking to myself, this must be how Barbara Reid got her start. (If you are unsure just who Barbara Reid is, here is a link to her website - she is the most awesome plasticine artist.)

Back to my story...well, my story is best told by showing the photos of our work:
And while we were hard at work creating these beautiful pieces...Mr. Benjamin was sneaking Tim Bits and hiding from the camera!

It's All Patience and Love
Well, we bought ourselves an ice cream maker. Yep. In the middle of winter - and the coldest week so far here in Ontario...and you know what? It's awesome! I should tell you though, that ice cream is all about patience and love. It doesn't just happen in a few minutes...it takes time. Isn't that a metaphor for all the best things in life?
The kids were mildly disappointed that we had to 1)chill the bowl for 24 hours prior to using and 2) chill the ice cream mixture for 2 hours before pouring it into the icy bowl. Other than that, it's all gone well. We have made chocolate and strawberry - both rival our good ol' favourite Kawartha Dairy. That's right. Kawartha Dairy ice cream has been the top of our list for years...now it's going to be Adventure Mommy Ice Cream.
The patience part we tackled... and the love part? That's easy! That's one great recipe for deliciously awesome home made ice cream!

The Ice Rink
Yipee! Our ice rink is finally skate-able! And we had a bunch of kids out this aft to test it out. I just love love love these perfectly wintery, wonder-filled days. Sitting by the fire, glass of wine in hand...perfectly perfect. It's these days that I really feel so blessed. I can look out and see everything snow covered and be in awe.
This is what its all about...

What's Your Fancy?
Today was manicure day at the retirement home...and it's always a hoot with these ladies. We always have these big laughs and I come away from there feeling happy and rejuvenated...and thankful.
I was working on some beautiful hands today - although the lady thought that she was "old" and said her hands were awful. That everything about her was awful. I said no - that's not true. Your hands are beautiful (which they were) and she was lovely. So onto the final step of our manicure...nail polish. I stood up and was digging through our bin (which has about 85 bottles of colour) and asked the lady "What's your fancy"? She replied "Well, I'd like him to be 6'2", with eyes of blue". We all started laughing! God, it was so funny. We kept her laughing after that and she seemed a bit more upbeat...well, if she can still fancy a man, she can't be that old!!!

A Quiet Moment (because no one's up yet!)
Sometimes I truly love being the only one awake in the house in the wee morning hours. There's something almost magical about the early morning - still dark outside, everyone sleeping (even the dog) and me, just puttering around, tiptoeing because I really want to enjoy this moment in time for as long as possible. I don't even think about making the coffee yet -
Ahhh, then the alarm goes off in someone's room and the day bursts in!
Hope you can find a quiet moment, just for yourself moment, time to do what you want moment, today.

More Shopping Adventures
The other day I was shopping at my favourite grocery store - Fresh Co. - when a woman was coming toward me down an aisle. Now, I have blogged before about being in the grocery store and convincing another customer to purchase something. I can be fairly persuasive - and chatty. A good combination. But this woman got me! She walked up to me, and started going on about the merits of this all natural brown sugar - and it was on sale. It's a 10lb bag of natural sugar! Not refined. It's great in tea, coffee, you can sub it in for baking - everything! Well, I picked up that bag (from her cart), checked it out, she followed me to where it was in the store and voila! I bought a bag. I had a chuckle to myself in the checkout line...I was upsold. Me! Imagine. What is this world coming to? I better get back on my game. LOL!

Published!
Adventure Mommy has officially been published. I found a website that took all my blog entries including pics and printed it, bound it and shipped it to my door. I so love technology! And when I received my book, I was in awe. Seriously. Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but sometimes you do have to do a bit of tooting. No pun intended! I read my book from cover to cover - and some of the entries made me cry, some made me laugh (like the Window Washing entry) but mostly I was just amazed. Wow. I wrote this. That's pretty awe-se-mazing!
My mom has been the only other person (so far) to read my book. She borrowed it over the holidays. When she returned it to me, she told me that some of the entries made her cry too. That's how I write. That is why I write. To evoke emotion. I know when I've got a good entry - because when I read it back to myself, I either laugh, cry or say Ah-haa!! That was a beauty!
Keep smiling! And thanks for sharing my journey.

Crossword Confusion
I love to do the daily crossword. I tell myself that it will keep my mind sharp - and who doesn't want that?
I'm working on the crossword today - which seems exceptionally difficult - maybe because it's January 1st and we enjoyed a great evening celebrating with our friends (aka too much drink!) For sure this is the case today for the Yes Man...
Crossword clue: Cold War pres. 3 letters
Adventure Mommy to Yes Man: Cold War pres.
Yes Man - lowering his glasses: J. Edgar Hoover
Adventure Mommy: What?? He was the head of the CIA
Yes Man: Kennedy
Yes Man: Nixon
Adventure Mommy: No, it was the guy in the wheelchair
Yes Man: Speedy
I am still cracking up over that!! I love Sunday mornings with the paper and the Yes Man. And I know it's Tuesday - but whatever! I love Tuesday mornings too!
They say that how you spend January 1st sets a precedent for the rest of the year. Bring it on!
